Sell My Assets
How Should I Sell My Assets?
We believe that combining modern technology with the tried-and-true effectiveness of the auction process is the ultimate method to bring buyers and sellers together. However, it may not be for everyone, depending on what you are hoping to sell. Is this your first experience selling something online? What sort of goods do you have access to? Consider these questions as we look at options below.
Word of Mouth
If you have singular assets or items of low-to-mid value, selling by word of mouth might be a great solution for you. Wanting to sell your used car? Did you receive a new couch or lawn mower and need to move the last one out quickly? Is your dad's old baseball card collection gathering dust in the closet? We suggest first asking around to your friends and acquaintances about selling this type of property. Maybe send out a Facebook post that your friends can comment on or share with their own circles. Especially if you are having the buyer pick up directly from your home, you might be more comfortable if you know them personally.
Online Marketplaces
If you would like to increase the reach of potential buyers for your items or if you are just starting to sell more consistently online, check out Facebook Marketplace, eBay, or Craigslist. Here is a short guide to the value of each one:
-
Craigslist: America’s Garage Sale - this simple ‘classified’ website has been around for 25 years and has not changed its interface all that much. Craigslist is great for selling and listing vehicles and large farm tools because people generally look for individual vehicles on it. The individual fee is minimal but makes it so it isn’t worth listing low-value items.
-
eBay: eBay is an online sales site that can be very useful for finding prices or running a business. It does offer auction options, but in recent years it has switched to more of a set price model. The biggest problem you will encounter with eBay is going to be shipping, which most buyers will expect. Gym equipment tends to be very heavy, and by definition, eBay does not encourage sales for pick-up.
-
Facebook Marketplace: Launched in 2016, Facebook Marketplace has a massive buyer list, has no fees to list, and is incredibly intuitive to use. You can simply list an item, and deal directly with a buyer—a la Craigslist—but with the easy-to-use interface and messaging system, you don’t need to wade through encrypted messages to sell items.
These sites provide a casual platform for you to sell as many or as few items as you'd like on your own timeline. This would give you as the seller full control of your items, but they provide little to no support if you have questions or limited time. These will also require you to coordinate shipping or a time and place for handing off the purchased items.
Online Auctions
The convenience of online auctions makes them a perfect fit for sellers who have a lot of items and/or a short timeframe in which to sell them. This might include a consistent inventory of truckload items, vehicles on a military base, a business or restaurant liquidation, or turned over supplies and equipment at a corporate office.
There are many factors that will make up a successful auction on Equip-Bid.com:
-
Craigslist: America’s Garage Sale - this simple ‘classified’ website has been around for 25 years and has not changed its interface all that much. Craigslist is great for selling and listing vehicles and large farm tools because people generally look for individual vehicles on it. The individual fee is minimal but makes it so it isn’t worth listing low-value items.
-
Value of the items: Buyers are only interested in the assets that are available. Higher value items will inevitably receive higher bid prices and more competition. Low-value items or "garage sale" leftovers typically perform poorly, and we are often unable to accept them or liquidate them profitably.
-
Condition of the items: Assets in clean, working condition perform the best on Equip-Bid.com. Potential buyers make purchasing decisions based on the pictures that are provided. A clean and orderly sale location can make a potential buyer comfortable with the assets they are bidding on.
-
The number of buyers: Presenting your auction on Equip-Bid.com already gives you a leg up when it comes to potential buyers. With nearly 5,000,000 page views each month and tens of thousands of active bidders, Equip-Bid is the premier online auction website in the Midwest. However, certain auctions and situations will deserve extra exposure in order to find the "right" buyers. Equip-Bid Affiliates have access to comprehensive marketing options and expertise to help sellers find the right target audience for their assets.
-
Experience: Across the Equip-Bid team, there is over 150 years of experience in the auction field. This experience can help maximize return in the online auction format. There are many options when it comes to choosing how to liquidate your assets, make sure that you do not discount the importance that an experienced network can provide.
At Equip-Bid, we have a dedicated sales team that can walk through the process with you, organize and list your items for auction, promote your sale to a nationwide buyer base on our website, and settle with you quickly after the auction closes. If you would like to submit an inquiry about selling with us, please fill out the survey below.
Donate and Downscale
If none of these options sound like they would work for you, see if there is a donation center nearby. Some can even help you coordinate large-item drop-off.
(Have you heard about our partnership with Bunjii in the Kansas City and Wichita areas?)
Finding a way to recycle unwanted items instead of throwing them away or being frustrated over their taking up space in your garage is always a plus. We wish you the best of luck with finding the very best solution for you!
